Sneak in some unexpected learning with stops at favorite local destinations like the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, which offers interactive, kid-focused exhibitions that keep young visitors entertained and informed. Or make some treasured family memories during an expedition with Pioneer Trails Adventures, themed tours that are hosted in mule-drawn wagons. Tell your kiddos they’re embarking on their own pioneer-style journey as they experience wagon travel. More learning awaits at the Peace Pavilion, an interactive museum located near the historic Independence Square.

Every vacation should include plenty of time for play, and Independence is ready to make sure kids of all ages have a blast while they visit. Try a round or three of mini golf at Cool Crest Family Fun Center, a 1970s-era outdoor mini golf and arcade staple that offers a whopping four outdoor courses, or Prehistoric Putt, an indoor course that features two 18-hold courses and one wacky 9-hole course. Other recreation-focused options include Main Event Entertainment and Diamond Bowl & Billiards, both of which serve food so you can play all day.

Speaking of food, make sure your kids are fueled for adventure with a number of kid-friendly restaurants located around Independence. Several options await on the Independence Square, from burgers and pizza to hot dogs and tacos. Definitely save room for dessert with a stop at Clinton’s Soda Fountain and introduce your kids to the vintage magic of a soda shop complete with a refreshing phosphate or creamy milkshake.
