Entertainment options abound throughout Independence. Whatever you’re in the mood for — live music, a theater performance, sporting events or movies — you’ll find these and more happening year-round.
A few places you’re most likely to find entertainment on any given night: Cable Dahmer Arena, the historic Independence Square, and the Englewood Arts District. Each month, the Third Friday Art Walk combines gallery exhibits, art demonstrations and live performances in an evening created to celebrate art and artists.
Fun fact about the Square and Englewood Arts District entertainment connections? The Englewood Theater, which opened in 1949, later morphed into the KC Opry, a Nashville-style live music venue in the heart of Independence. A famous country musician — Garth Brooks — played the KC Opry and developed a friendship with the venue’s managers, Tuffy and Karen Williams. Listen to Brooks’ song, “The Old Stuff,” for a KC Opry shout-out. Also? Loretta Lynn played there, too. And keep an eye on the Englewood Theater, which has been purchased by the Friends of Englewood Theater in hopes of completing a thorough restoration.
The Independence Square is another entertainment hub, thanks to an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and theater spaces that are each ready to show you a good time. Annual festivities like Independence Day, SantaCaliGon Days and the holiday-themed event, Living Windows, guarantee a mix of live entertainment throughout the square; simply pause and enjoy the show unfolding in front of you.
