Outdoor Adventures, Parks, & Hiking Trails in Independence, MO
Midwest weather can be unpredictable, yes, but if you pack wisely, Independence offers outdoor exploring opportunities throughout the year.
Our recommendations: layers, comfortable shoes, a small crossbody bag or backpack, and your favorite reusable water container to stay hydrated.
The best starting point? One of several parks throughout Independence, many of which include nature trails for seasonal sightseeing. Try the Little Blue Trace Trail or George Owens Nature Park, both of which are open year-round. George Owens Nature Park also includes two fishing lakes, rain and butterfly gardens, a family picnic area and the DeWitt Nature Center, which features rotating exhibits and a children’s area. Noted local blogger and outdoors enthusiast, Kansas City Hiker, calls George Owens Nature Park “an excellent place to view birds and other wildlife.”
Inspired by President Harry S. Truman’s love of daily walks, Independence is also host to a number of history-themed trails that offer year-round self-guided exploration. Pick the topic you’re interested in — Truman’s life, Civil War battles or African-American or Mormon history — and embark on an adventure to learn more about Independence landmarks that are important to each of those themes. Or create your own self-guided tour as you explore an abundance of public art, religious sites or food and beverage landmarks, one of which dates back to the 1890s!
