Bakeries
It’s no wonder Independence is home to an array of mouthwatering bakeries and sweet shops. The Waggoner family purchased a stately home in 1879 that had previously belonged to artist George Caleb Bingham.
On the grounds of the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, the family produced a wildly successful brand of baking and cake flour: Queen of the Pantry Flour, named in honor of the city’s moniker, the Queen City of the Trails.
The flour is no longer available, but the legacy of exceptional baked goods continues throughout Independence. Frannie Frank’s Coffee Cakes, located in the Englewood Arts District, sells award-winning coffee cakes made from Frannie Frank’s original recipe. Today, Frannie’s daughter, Jill, and granddaughter, Jenny, continue shop operations with a delectable array of coffee cakes. Buy a few extra to bring home and share with your friends and colleagues — unless you want to keep them to yourself!
Another family-owned shop — Pickens Sweet Treats — features handmade toffees, fudge and filled chocolates created by sisters Natalie and Nanette Pickens. If you find yourself wrestling with a candy craving and you’re out of the area, place an order through the Pickens’ Etsy shop.
Dave’s Bakery & Deli serves lunch and freshly baked goods, but if you want to start with dessert, we won’t blame you! The gooey caramel pecan roll is a standout with a cup of hot coffee. Or grab a few freshly baked cookies in case you need an afternoon snack.
Or explore the delicious world of Mexican pastries at Don Chago Bakery, which beckons with freshly baked Mexican bread and desserts, plus tamales and pizza. Not sure what to order? Always start with a slice of dulce de leche cake and thank us later!
