Some stories never really leave. And in Independence, Missouri, some say the people behind them haven’t either.

With more than 200 years of history, Independence has seen pioneers heading west, Civil War conflict, notorious outlaws, grand Victorian families and generations of people leaving their mark on the community. Today, that history lives on in museums, mansions, businesses and landmarks throughout the city—and, according to local legends and those who have experienced the unexplained, perhaps in a few other ways, too.

This fall, Paranormal Pursuit invites you to explore the spirited side of Independence. The limited-time digital passport features 13 locations connected to ghost stories, paranormal encounters, local legends and mysterious happenings.

Vaile Mansion: The Lady Who Never Left
With its towering windows, grand staircase and elaborate Victorian details, the Vaile Mansion can feel like something straight from a Gothic novel. Built in 1881 for Harvey and Sophia Vaile, the 31-room mansion was considered one of the grandest homes in the region. Behind its elaborate architecture, however, is a much more somber story. Sophia died in the home in 1883 while Harvey was away, and over the years, stories have emerged suggesting that the former lady of the house may never have completely left. Visitors and volunteers have reported unexplained experiences throughout the mansion, and one of its best-known legends involves sightings of a mysterious woman believed by some to be Sophia. Some accounts describe a female figure appearing near the windows or moving through the home, including along its grand staircase. Whether you believe in ghosts or simply love a good mystery, wandering through the Vaile's beautifully preserved rooms makes it easy to imagine the generations who once walked the same halls. Bingham-Waggoner Estate: Footsteps, Figures and a House Full of Stories.
The Bingham-Waggoner Estate has witnessed nearly two centuries of Independence history. The property sits directly along the historic Santa Fe Trail, where thousands of travelers once passed as they prepared to journey west. Artist and politician George Caleb Bingham called the property home before the Waggoner family purchased it in 1879.Today, visitors can explore the 26-room mansion filled with original furnishings and family possessions. But some visitors and paranormal enthusiasts believe not every resident has moved on. Over the years, stories of unexplained activity have become part of the estate's lore. Reports have included mysterious figures, unusual photographs and sightings associated with the mansion's staircase. Guests and staff have also shared stories of unexplained sounds and experiences within the historic home. Are they echoes of the people who once lived here, or simply the creaks and shadows of a house that has stood for generations? You'll have to decide for yourself.

1859 Jail Museum: Spend Some Time With the Inmates.
Heavy limestone walls. Iron cell doors. A dark history stretching back to the days before the Civil War. The 1859 Jail Museum doesn't need much help creating an eerie atmosphere. The jail once housed thousands of prisoners, including some of the most notorious names associated with the region's history. Frank James spent months behind its walls, and guerrilla leader William Quantrill was also held here. Just feet away from the cell block, generations of jailers lived with their families in the adjoining Marshal's Home. The site also witnessed tragedy. Jackson County Sheriff Henry Bugler was murdered at the jail in 1866.Today, stories of unexplained voices, apparitions and strange activity have made the jail a favorite destination for paranormal enthusiasts. The Jackson County Historical Society even hosts Jail Haunts experiences in October, including haunted-history tours featuring reports from paranormal investigators and select after-hours, lights-out paranormal investigations. Pioneer Trails Adventures: Take a Haunted Ride Through Independence.
Prefer your ghost stories with a little fresh air?Climb aboard a mule-drawn covered wagon with Pioneer Trails Adventures and experience Independence's haunted history from the streets where many of the stories began. During October, Pioneer Trails Adventures offers its Ghost Tour, combining a haunted wagon ride through the historic streets of Independence with paranormal investigation experiences. Along the way, you'll hear stories tied to some of the city's historic locations and the people who once occupied them. There's something particularly eerie about rolling through Independence after dark, listening to hoofbeats against the street while hearing tales of outlaws, Civil War conflict and unexplained encounters.
