Independence, Missouri, Queen City of the Trails will be the starting line for this annual competition of university students. This year, the course will follow the Santa Fe Trail route (200th anniversary) to Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is a competition to design, build, and drive solar-powered cars in a time/travel rally. Missouri will also be celebrating it’s 200th anniversary in 2021, so our starting line will celebrate Missouri Statehood with a look back at transportation in the 1800s. Join us on the historic Independence Square on August 3 for Display Day. You can take a close look at the cars and talk with the design and build teams. We will also be celebrating Missouri’s bicentennial with a look back at transportation then and now.
Plans for 2021 include both the American Solar Challenge road event and the Formula Sun Grand Prix track event/qualifier. These events are contingent on the COVID-19 virus situation and a return to normalcy, and may be adjusted as needed depending on the circumstances, restrictions, and other factors beyond our control. Partnering with the National Park Service, the intention for 2021 is to have the route commemorate the bicentennial of the Santa Fe Trail. This unique opportunity for 2021 that will take the event from Independence, MO to Santa Fe, NM in initial planning. Details of the route are still being developed.
