Mrs. Truman: Trailblazer of First Ladies
223 N Main St
Independence, MO 64050
Former First Lady Bess Truman left her beloved family home at 219 North Delaware Street to the American people in her will upon her passing in October 1982. As the National Park Service and Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum were working together to prepare the home for public tours, Margaret Truman Daniel, Harry and Bess’ only child, was instrumental in the process. Margaret Truman became a singer, television personality, author of over twenty five books, wife and mother of four sons.
During a 1984 episode of a PBS series called “Smithsonian World,” aired less than two years after her mother’s death, an emotional Mrs. Daniel shared stories with writer David McCullough, and gave viewers a rare glimpse into the private lives of the Trumans via a tour of their home, almost top to bottom. Not aired since 1984, the documentary will be showed in celebration of the Mrs. Truman and Mrs. Daniel, both of whom introduced Independence, Missouri and Midwestern life to the White House and the world.Hours
