The role of Lieutenant Dan in “Forrest Gump” not only kick-started Gary Sinise’s career — it also gave him a new life mission as a passionate advocate for veterans and active duty service members. In his new book “Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service,” Sinise tells the story of how he went from a trouble-making kid to a successful actor and eventually a tireless supporter of those who have served our country.

Starring as the 33rd president in the 1995 film, “Truman,” earned Sinise a Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award. For his service work, Sinise has been presented with humanitarian awards including the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment and the Spirit of Hope Award by the Department of Defense. He is also the recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor awarded by the President of the United States.

Registration open to nonmembers of the Truman Library Institute beginning Feb. 11.
